Introduction
BBCMA was founded in the beginning of the 1980s. At that time, many
book merchants from Bras Basah Road and North Bridge
Road as well as merchants in other districts dealing
in books and related trades took up shop space in
BBC.
In order to settle common problems and to
protect their interest as well as to improve
communication, the merchants at the BBC founded Bras
Basah Complex Shopholders’ Association led by
- Mr Chow Li Liang of Union Bookstore
- Mr Zhang Kerun of International Bookshop
- Mr C C Low of Sheng Enterprise
- Mr Leong Qingjing of Far East Book Publishers and others.
Mr C C Low of Sheng Enterprise was the Chairman of the First Term Committee.
The Bras Basah Complex Shop Holders' Association changed its name to Bras Basah Complex
Merchants' Association in the 1990s.
In the
Chinese Language, the name of the Association
reflects its purpose well and is still in use today.
Our Mission
- Improve, protect and represent members interests in Bras Basah Complex.
- Improve mutual understanding among members so as to build better relationships.
- Organize or jointly present commercial promotions, exhibitions etc to improve the business of our members.
- To gather distribute information, statistics and business enquiries for the members.
- To improve the overall business of BBC by providing necessary assistance and proposals through dialogue with the members.
The past
committees of BBCMA have done much in the
developments of the BBC resulting in more benefits
for its members. This included joint promotional
activities and hosting of xinyao concerts etc ...
With the efforts of BBCMA, many members have
benefited from the government's plan of "shop
tenants to own their shops", the recent re-building
of BBC and the Book Fairs etc ...
BBC's image of
"Books and Arts Centre” was the result of many years
of hard work by BBCMA and the merchants.
Today with the successful implementation of the urban
renewal plan, our surroundings will soon see new
changes which will result in new business
opportunities for BBC.
How to be sufficiently
prepared for the new market? How to project a new
image in the face of a new crowd? These are the new
challenges of BBCMA and its merchants and will be
BBCMA's new target.
However, with the unity and
strong support of its members, BBCMA is full of
confidence and together we can work towards our
common goals.
